Update from Trish Euerle
Hi All!
I’m sorry for not writing in so long. I want to express how very grateful
we are to all of you who have continued to pray for us, think of us, and
perform such acts of kindness and generosity on our behalf. We were just
doing so well, and life was looking somewhat “normal,” with Dave back to
work and all – when he had the stroke. We were humbled. Dave is speaking
almost as fluently as before, but experiencing deficits in motor and
speech abilities was... sobering. It brought up all sorts of worries,
doubts, fears, and was discouraging. However, when we found ourselves in
that position, we cried out to God. I cried out to God. It took a few days
of wrestling, and a period of 2 steps forward and 1 step back, but I was
uplifted to a new plane of trust and resting in faith. Dave has walked
through fire again and is yet more refined and grows in his ability to
endure these challenging times. God is so, so faithful to provide for all
of our needs. Here is one of our favorite passages: “We are hard pressed
on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted,
but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2Cor.4:8) Further in
2 Corinthians, are words that enable us to somewhat make sense of what we
are going through. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we
are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our
light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that
far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes on what is unseen. For what is
seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
So Dave and I are coping well – thanks for your prayers!! However, the
toughest issue for us is how our children are coping. The medicines that
Dave is on did have an effect upon his personality – read: he was a bit
cranky! This is not such a problem now – but it was for a while. It is so
hard for the kids to adjust to ever-changing moods. Dave has (thanks to
the Lord) overcome this effect – and is quite steady now; but it did cause
a bit of anxiety for a while. Though the crankiness is mostly gone, the
kids’ anxiety is not all gone. We ask that you support our children in
prayer – that they will be able to voice their concerns and to seek the
Lord for comfort.
I wanted to tell you all how wonderful the men and women of the Santa
Clara Fire Department have been. They are right there for us, like a
family. They drop in on Dave to visit, they chauffeur him to doctor
appointments and work obligations when I am unavailable, they have us to
dinner at the stations, and check in on Dave regularly. The union has
raised a considerable amount of funds for a foundation that benefits our
family: for uncovered medical costs, survivor’s benefits, etc. Following a
very successful hockey tournament, the San Jose Sharks themselves decided
to host a silent auction of autographed hockey sticks at an upcoming game
to benefit the union’s foundation. We are blessed to be among such
generous people.
I must wrap this us and get to bed. Dave has a PET scan on Thursday the
2nd. He has an MRI on Friday the 3rd. We are praying for no new growth!!
He is currently taking quite a few medications, and hopefully will be able
to drop some of them soon. He stays in the hospital for 2 days each month
to receive biochemotherapy maintenance treatments; and continues to
self-administer the drugs at home all the rest of the month. Thankfully,
he has no problem injecting himself.
We do not know the details of our future, but we know beyond any doubt
that our hope lies in the Lord. He is the same God of Abraham, Noah, and
David; the God who created this world of stunning beauty, who created the
oceans, the heavens, the delicate butterfly and the incredible human body.
He has said: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” (Jer.29:11)
We cling to these words. We are experiencing blessing upon blessing, and
are filled with joy and hope.
Finally, here are some specific areas of prayer need:
1. For physical healing! No new growth and reduction of existing tumors.
For Dave’s complete recovery of fluent speech and writing.
2. For spiritual growth: for deepening our knowledge of our God. For a
hunger and thirst for His words, and for the discipline to hunker down
with the Bible. For keen ears and discernment of God’s direction.
3. For the Euerle children: for comfort and security. For resilience and
patience with Dave’s understandable periodic crankiness. For spiritual
growth – that they will make their faith their own.
4. For Tricia: that I don’t get tired and worn down. All wives and moms
need this prayer, but that I might balance serving my husband with serving
my children, my mom, and others.
That is mainly it. Thank you so much.
Love and many blessings,
Tricia Euerle

November 22,, 2005 - Update
from Dave and Trish
Hello and Happy Thanksgiving,
It is indeed a time of thanks! Attached is a note that Dave composed, and
I must tell you that the note is evidence of God’s answers to my prayers
from the past five years or so. It goes against
common sense to be thankful for a disease that came into our lives and
turned everything upside down. It also seems strange to be thankful for
the fact that we still do not know what the future holds – although it all
seems promising, we do not have reassurance that Dave will make a full
recovery and be disease free in the future. However, we love how close it
is keeping us in our walk together and with the Lord. We love and
appreciate how you all have been the body of Christ to us – supporting us
in prayer and countless other ways. We have learned a lot about love and
selfless, sacrificial giving. Thank you for showing us. We also love how
has God surprised us by the many unexpected ways He has shown us faithful
sustenance and abundant blessing. The attached note is evidence of
answered prayer because it reflects a humble, gentle, peaceful, reassured,
and reverent man. Dave has been transformed, and is continuing to grow.
Praise to our Father in Heaven, and thanks to you, also – who have served
and cared for us.
Must get to bed. Thank you, all. We will keep you posted about Dave’s
future treatments.
What are you thankful for this season?
Dear brothers and sisters,
Tricia and I have just returned from a visit to Dr Kashani-Sabet and his
team at the UCSF Cancer Center. After a full day meetings with his team,
our ride home was quite different from the one a year ago. A year ago we
had only hope that our Lord and Savior would see us through the uncharted
journey that lay ahead. Now looking back we can share with you some of the
many blessings that come from prayer and sound medical treatment.
The doctor was very encouraged that over this last year there has been no
evidence of progressive disease. My treatment has resulted in what he
calls a mixed response. My brain cured, some tumors eradicated, yet a few
remain, but no signs of progressive disease!
So what am I thankful for this season? First, I am thankful for a God who
is all He says He is! He has heard our prayers and I believe has answered
many according to His plan…not mine! I am thankful for my wife Tricia (my
earthly rock!), my four beautiful children, Sophie, Sammy, Gracie and
Bella who continue to teach me about Christ’s love. And I am thankful for
all of you! You who have prayed unceasingly, you who have helped with
every need and you who were always there to encourage during some of our
darkest hours, thank you!
So what’s next? I will begin what the Dr Kashani calls an
“Immuno-maintenance” program. It is like the bio-chemo I experienced the
last six months without the chemo. We call it “bio-light” all the great
healing properties with half the side effects. It will require me to be
hospitalized two days a month and the remaining treatment I can do at
home. I will also be able to keep working (modified duty) during my
treatments. My hospital treatment will require me to fly to southern
California to the John Wayne Cancer Institute once a month for the
duration of my treatment. How long you ask? As long as it takes…according
to His plan…not mine!
So, what are you thankful for this season?
May God bless you all,
Dave

It was with great
delight that your donation acknowledgement letter was received Thank you
for taking the time to bring us current with the Heinz family and advising
the website address we can visit. Your considerate letter was a first such
communication in its depth and a delightful insight into the community
caring of the Santa Clara Firefighters. Bouquets to you and your fellow

May 9, 2005 - Update
from Dave and Trish
Hello dear friends,
Well, we’ve got some new specific prayer needs for
you now. After radiation Monday morning, Dave will be admitted to Good
Sam Hospital to undergo a week of biochemotherapy. I’ll let you read what
he’s composed:
Greetings to all,
Well the next battle begins in earnest tomorrow. After
my 0630 radiation treatment I will be admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital
for a week of biochemotherapy. My doctors were happy with my progress
until a tumor over my left hip began to grow quickly causing me some
discomfort. As the originals (tumors) had stayed the same with one
disappearing, the doctors felt it was time to try something stronger in
light of the change over my hip.
My regimen will be one week in the hospital for treatment
followed by three weeks off and then start again. This will continue for
the next 4-6 months.
Biochemo is supposed to be pretty rough. Please
pray that Dave will tolerate it well and not be too uncomfortable to rest
peacefully all week. Also that he will gain his strength back when he
returns home for the 3 weeks between treatments. All of our summer
plans are on hold – we don’t know how all of this will look. Which leads
me to our next concern...
Sammy & Sophie are asking more questions and
showing more worry. We have had 2 friends die suddenly in the last 3
weeks, plus my father’s death in March. They have been asking about
death. It’s a bit tricky to handle. Please pray for our wisdom and
Sammy & Sophie’s comfort and faith. We have learned that Sammy asks
and that Sophie tends to internalize her worry. (It manifests in
unreasonable anger over tiny issues). However, since we know that, we
are able to bring Sophie around to talking about her worries. Gracie and
Bella continue to play with their animals that the father is sick with
cancer. The Giraffe family keeps taking trips to the doctor, getting
x-rays, shots, and prescriptions of leaf soup, but Father Giraffe is still
sick. (Sometimes it’s the elephant family).
We are learning so much! So, so many prayers have
been answered. Only 5 months ago, I was praying that Dave would draw near
to the Lord, and read his Bible more. That prayer has been, and continues
to be answered!!! I have been shown how God is my pillar of cloud by day,
and my pillar of fire by night – He will guide me as I make difficult
decisions.
We loved this from Jonah: “When my life was
ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your
holy temple. Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that
could be theirs. But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to
you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the Lord.”
We are experiencing so much grace!
And this is from 2 Corinthians: “Therefore we do
not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away yet inwardly we are
being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are
achieving for us an eternal glory that fare outweighs them all. So we fix
our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is
temporary but what is unseen is eternal.”
So, here are the requests: 1) pray that Dave
tolerates the biochemo this week well. That he is able to rest.
2) Pray that these treatments do what they are
supposed to do! That they destroy the cancer cells – all of them.
3) For wisdom for Dave and I as we shepherd our
children through this time.
4) For comfort and faith for our children.
Thank you for your care, friends. I’ll write
again soon so that you know how it is all going.
Grace to you,
Tricia

Hello!
Here is the state of the Euerle's at this moment. First, from Dave:
Where did the last six months go?
Greetings to everyone,
Sorry it has been a while since our last update but there has not been a
whole lot to report. Let’s bring you up to date. The doctors are still
happy with the way things look in my head and we will continue to monitor
the healing process. No new lesions or tumors after the last MRI.
Last week I began having pain in my left groin and saw my doctor. She
theorized it was being caused by the tumor in that region. A PET scan the
next day confirmed that it had grown and was the source of my pain. The
scan also showed that the spots in my right lung and left abdomen have not
changed in size (yea!) and the best part, the tumor under my right
clavicle was gone! Praise God.
I met with my radiation oncologist today and I will begin a month of
radiation for the tumor over my left ilium. My primary oncologist is
awaiting word from Dr Kashani at USCF and together we will map out a
treatment plan for the next six months.
Romans 5:3-4 reads And not only this, but we also exult in our
tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and
perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;
Fighting the Good Fight
Dave
We had a bit of a journey last week, when Dave had the pain, the “stat”
PET scan, and the big wait to hear the results. We are greatly encouraged
by the findings – the disappearance of one of the tumors is an answer to
our prayers for a little encouragement. The last several months have
lulled us a bit – Dave has been tolerating the medications well and has
had impressive energy. However, last week gave us cause to face the facts
and their indications again.
Please indulge me as I want to share with you the thoughts I had last
week. I recognize myself to be a hard worker, with a bit of a “super
person” complex. I like things the way I like them, and I will do the work
to get them that way. In my hindsight, last November my busy-ness was
reaching a fevered peak when Dave was rushed to the hospital, toppling my
tower. Last week, I was perhaps, in my mind, putting my little empire of
achievement ahead of the main thing: seeking first the kingdom of God &
His righteousness; serving my husband and family.
There was a strange dichotomy of thoughts dueling in my brain. One the one
hand, I was filled with determination to fight this enemy with vigor on
all fronts: medicine, nutrition, prayer. On the other hand, the “super
person” in me was rising, preparing to deflect whatever pain lay in the
future. Ready to take over leadership of the family, do whatever it takes
to keep the children in the school of our choice, all that stuff. The work
I’m doing is for my family, and for a secure future – but I do not want to
miss whatever time I have to simply relax and enjoy hanging out with my
husband. I am occasionally asked what movies Dave and I have recently seen
– and there have been none in the past year. Not even the ones you view at
home! So, my alarm has gone off, and I am learning to entrust my family’s
future to the Lord’s care. I am seeking balance with a new, more
enlightened determination. To rest in faith. As a friend reminded me the
other day, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the
nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10) It’s not about us
– it’s about bringing honor and glory to our God! He also gave me a
different translation: “Stop striving, and know that I am God...”
I have the sense that this cancer is a huge metaphor for our life – and,
bit by bit, the unhealthy parts are being destroyed. And now, to bed –
because I was determined to send out this update! Oh! Prayer requests: 1)
please pray that bit by bit the cancer will be destroyed! 2)Please pray
that I can cease striving – and rest in faith.
We love you! We are always praying for blessings on you all. Thank you for
your care and your prayers!
In Christ,
Tricia

March 1, 2005
Our Dear Friends,
Sorry it has taken so long, but here at last is an update on our dear
Dave. First, some words from the actual Dave:
January 26th, 2005
Greetings dear family,
Dave here with an update, I apologize there has not been much to report
until this week. Please know that I have been feeling well and for the
last five days, have an appetite and actually look forward to eating. Now
for the news.
This has been a busy month brain, body scans and round three of chemo.
First the brain MRI. The doctors were happy with the results. There is
still “something” in the area of the tumor. They are happy because there
is nothing new and the something is smaller than anything seen on previous
scans (I know other than my brain). The treatment plan for now, no extra
radiation just more chemo. As for the PET (of my body) the doctors gave me
mixed news. In the original areas of concern, some were smaller in size
while some had remained unchanged (good news). The bad news was that those
areas had some company, nodal involvement in my cervical region (neck for
you non-med types) and groin. The plan more chemo, the addition of a new
drug and yes you guessed it more scans. One last bit of news (and it is
good) I got my driving privileges back (can you hear Tricia screaming
YEA!) The short version of this is that there is still much to do and will
many more scans and drug treatments.
To be completely honest everybody, I didn’t know how I felt about all the
news I received this month. At first disappointment, but never despair. I
figured we’d be further down the road than this. But as I was helping our
2 1/2 year old Isabella learn to ride her trike I heard God say
“patience”. Was he talking to me, or about Bella? As we rode on and she
slowly mastered the peddling it was clear He was talking to me. Patience.
So I remain undeterred, resolved to continue this fight! I have never lost
that drive nor my faith in the power of the Great Physician. Thank you for
taking this journey with us.
So there is the medical report. We are not discouraged. Rather, it is
exciting to be in the middle of God’s plan. Friends, except for the whole
“terminal illness” bit, things have never been better!! I know that seems
absurd, but consider this: Dave and I have never been closer in our
relationship; we have never prayed as much together than we have in the
last 4 months; we are more aware of our witness to our children and our
community. Oh my goodness, we have the great joy of seeing our Lord take
care of matters big and small – He is continually delivering us. Your
prayers are surrounding us and keeping us buoyant. It is not the slightest
effort to stay positive – we just are. Best of all, we are growing. Dave
has just said “No” to the History Channel and “Monster Garage”, and is
digging into some wonderful reading. “Therefore we do not lose heart.
Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed
day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an
eternal glory that far outweighs them all. “ 2 Cor. 4:16-17. This is an
answer to prayer!!!!!
At first Dave was a bit disappointed that his MRI and PET scans were not
just squeaky-clean – but he and I both realize that we are so accustomed
to instant gratification, and one of our many lessons is in patience,
waiting on the Lord, and staying strong in our faith that God is in
control. Also, that our source of strength and our hope lies in the Lord –
and we want, need, to draw close to Him during this time. How wonderful!!!
Yes, we are being driven to our knees, clinging to our faith – but wow!
Such amazing benefits to clinging to God! We are finding joy, peace,
contentment, soaring victory over the enemy, who wants to destroy our hope
and faith. It’s those wings of eagles from Isaiah!!
We had the wonderful joy of watching my dear, sweet sister be married in
Del Mar last month. It was beyond lovely. My father, who is nearing the
end of his life, slowly and painstakingly escorted her down the aisle.
Sammy was the ring-bearer, Sophie, Gracie, and Bella were flower girls –
they all loved every minute – especially the limo ride. We cherished this
happy celebration together. Goodness, how those wedding vows take on new
significance after 16 years of marriage and our new circumstances. ( I
attached a picture of Dave and I).
For the last 2 weeks, Dave has been feeling great. He has had a wonderful
appetite – it seems his sense of smell has returned. He loves going to the
firehouse and sharing a meal with the guys. We have done that all
together, and now that he can drive again – he has even just gone by
himself to spend the evening at the firehouse. He loves that. However,
Dave is now in Glendale, assisting my mom and the hospice worker with my
dad. Even though he starts round 4 of chemo tomorrow, and the first day
has historically been pretty bad, I think he’ll get more rest at my
parent’s house than here with all of us. Dave is particularly gifted with
bedside care, plus he is a paramedic, and, even though he’s lost some 30
pounds, he’s still pretty strong. My mom asked him to stay during the
week. I don’t think it will be much longer for my dad, but he’s a
believer, and has put us all at peace. We had the wedding together –
perfect timing.
OK, so I want to tell of one more thing. In John, Jesus said, “If you
abide in my, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it
shall be done for you.” We are claiming this!!! We are working on soaking
up God’s word, writing it in our hearts, and abiding in it. In the words
of my Bible study teacher, our theology and our reality have merged.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your services to us!!!! Such delicious
meals, so lovingly prepared and delivered. Please excuse my lack of
thank-you notes. It is my painful reality that I don’t have time. (I know
you’ve noticed the time of day I tend to send these updates out – see? I’m
a busy lady.) Thank you to my carpool drivers on Tuesday and Thursday –
you are providing such a valuable service to us!!! Most of all, thank you
for continuing to uphold us in prayer!!! It is no doubt keeping the enemy
far from us. Here are our specific requests:
1) please pray for Dave’s continued spiritual growth – and keeping his
eyes focused on God
2) please pray that Dave handles this 4th round of chemo well – that he
can return to eating again soon
3) please pray that the cancer is destroyed and does not return!!!
I recently read some wonderful verses in Deuteronomy 7 about God sending a
“hornet” among the enemy nations until even the
hiding survivors have perished. How God will drive out those nations
little by little, not eliminating them all at once. This
encourages us to practice patience and faith, and wait upon the Lord!! He
will drive out and destroy even those pesky, hiding
cells.
Thank you again!! We are blessed to know you, and we thank God every day
for you all, and ask His blessing upon you.
Grace to you,
Tricia

Dear Brother’s,
Sister’s, Family and Friends,
Forgive me if you have already received this update from Tricia. She is on
a much deserved vacation at a resort in Mexico. As for me, I am slowly but
surely getting over my cold and feel my strength returning. I have one
prayer to add to all of Tricia’s. It is for Tricia that when she returns
she will be able to get to bed before 1am. If you have noted the time of
her updates (this one too) they are usually after midnight. Thank for your
prayers!
Resting in His grip,
Dave
Subject: Another update on Dave Euerle
Happy New Year, Everyone!
I thought I’d write a brief note to let you know how Dave is doing. He
completed his 20 treatments of full-brain radiation on Christmas Eve, and
bid a bittersweet goodbye to his 10:15 AM radiation friends. The last 2
weeks of the treatments were marked by great fatigue, and rapid loss of
hair. To his relief, even the little whiskery bit are falling out,
reducing the Velcro effect, and making it much easier to don a knit cap. I
am cautiously optimistic that he will retain his eyebrows. Glory to our
Lord, his energy bounced right back a few days following the completion of
the treatments. We had a wonderful Christmas! Our dear friends the Palmers
took all 4 kids for 2 days and a night, and Dave and I got a lot of
cleaning out and organizing work done together at home, and got out to the
movies and dinner, too!
We traveled to Glendale last week, to spend time with my parents, and had
a wonderful trip. The pressure taken off my dad’s brain (since the removal
of his brain tumor in October) made a big difference in his level of
involvement with his grandchildren. We were filled with joy watching him
respond to them and interact with them in a more lively manner than we’d
seen in several years. We had a family fun New Year’s celebration,
including several delicious meals that Dave was really able to enjoy
(thanks, Chelle!) and a big silly-string fight at east-coast New Year’s
(9:00PM).
We are in the process of getting a referral for a nutritionist, and will
take up our battle on that front, as well. It will be interesting to see
how our bodies respond to the fairly drastic change in our diet that we
will make. I say we, because I will be doing it along with him. Don’t know
exactly what I’ll feed the kids yet, when we are in the maintenance stage,
but we’ll figure it out.
Dave started his second round of Temodar (chemotherapy) today, and so far,
so good. The anti-nausea medicine takes good care of him. It is the chemo
that is responsible for making him feel a bit yucky several times each
day. He just takes some more Zofran (anti-nausea) and keeps going. What is
really bothering him right now is a doozy of a cold he picked up recently.
He is immune-suppressed due to the radiation and chemo.
He will have another MRI on January... I think it is the 31st. It may be
the 21st. I will try to post the exact date for your prayers. We are
praying for and expecting a clear report – no new growth, and all the bad
cells gone.
Life goes on and we sometimes somehow lose a grasp on just how serious his
condition is. We still have to meet obligations and do laundry and prepare
meals and give baths to kids, etc. However, we understand that God has
something to teach us through this experience. Yes, we are absolutely
convinced of His sovereignty and compassion and faithfulness. However, we
are looking for what we need to change or adjust or learn. “Search me O
God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there
be any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Ps. 139;
23-24).
We are not worried. We are working to get all our affairs in order – but
that is really a good thing to do! Thanks in great part to all your
prayers, I’m sure, we are not having any trouble keeping our eyes on Jesus
and, like Peter, “walking on the water.” I guess the wind is blowing and
the waves are crashing, but there is great calm and peace in the Euerle
household (in a spiritual sense, strictly!). Here are our prayer needs: 1)
Dave’s complete healing: that his brain will be clear – with no new growth
and all old growth gone. That any cancer cells in his body will die and go
away and not return!!! 2) The the cold (congestion in his sinuses and
chest) will go away quickly, and that he will avoid more colds. 3) That
Dave and I will listen and follow where God may be leading us. That we
grow during this time. That Dave will grow into more spiritual maturity
(He is a young Christian with exuberant faith, but not a lot of Bible
knowledge at this point).
Alright, my friends, I am off to a fabulous (and all expense paid) spa
vacation in Playa del Carmen, Mexico that I earned through my business – I
leave tomorrow. My sister is here to sort of take my place for 6 days. I
really wanted to send out a bit of information to you before I left. Thank
you all so much for your precious prayers! We continue to feel uplifted –
thank you!! I am soooo tired now, but I will come back sooo refreshed!!! (
A nice little blessing for me – glory!)
We love you, Brothers and Sisters!
Grace to you,
Tricia

December, 2004
The Euerle Family asked that I share this
letter from Dave's wife Tricia with you: (Brother
Mike Herscovitch)
Hello Dear Friends,
I hope you all had nice Thanksgivings - ours was a wonderful visit with my
family in Glendale. Dave and my dad compared scars - Dave's is woefully
inadequate to my dad's. We treasured a full day and evening at Disney with
my sister and our dear friends Chris and Chelle Briggs and their 3
children. We played cards, kickball, lots of dueling Chopsticks on the
piano - and of course had a wonderful feast! All this is to let you know
that Dave feels great - well enough to have spent all day at Disneyland.
We learned the findings of the PET scan today. It is much less than what I
been prepared to hear, I am pleased to report. There are 3 spots of
abnormality: one on his right shoulder, in the lymph node, a nodule in his
lung, and possibly a spot behind the abdominal wall - in the muscle next
to his spine, sort of in the lower back. We go to Dr. Rubenstein at UCSF
for a bone marrow test and other blood work on Wednesday. Next Monday, the
6th is a big day. We will be going up to UCSF for a full day of meetings
and assessments with a panel of many physicians representing various areas
of expertise within the treatment of melanoma, led by Dr. Mohammad
Kashani-Sabet. While we go out for lunch - the team meets and evaluates
Dave's case. Then we return and meet to discuss the team's assessment and
medical recommendations. Dave and I are eager to find out more information
and just where we will next place our feet on this journey.
Monday the 6th is also a big day because some 45 firefighters are coming
to paint our house, which has been wearing primer for a long, long time!
The department chiefs are providing breakfast and lunch - but with 45 guys
on the job, I think they will be done long before lunch time! We are so,
so grateful and this act of kindness by so many just strengthens our faith
that God is carrying us through this.
Dave started his radiation therapy Monday. The guys from the department
made up a schedule of taking Dave to his treatments - I don't get to take
him to any of them - the brothers from SCFD have it covered through his
last treatment on Christmas Eve. He also started chemotherapy via a drug
called Temador. We have been told that he will lose his hair, permanently.
We will choose to think of this as visual reminder of God's care for us
through avenues we would have never thought .
I thank you for your prayers and your wonderful cards!! I know that they
are helping us take the focus off of us - and putting it on the marvelous
works of our Lord! We are seeing so many reminders of His care and awesome
power! I know I am using a lot of exclamation points, but I am exclaiming
this to you!!! Thank you for the verses many of you have sent. We have
been reading and have taken much joy in identifying with Paul when, in II
Corinthians he says
"...but this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who
raises the dead. He has delivered us
from such deadly peril, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our
hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help
us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the
gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many."
I thank you all for your generosity and loving support. I'm afraid of
sounding like an awards show (and of forgetting a name) - so I won't list
names, but my dear old Glendale friends and my incredible SLAH sisters -
you truly humble me by your generosity and love. Thank you!!
I must get to bed. I will write more when we know more. We are thinking of
this as a privilege, for God is revealing Himself to us. We are seeing
others see God - and that is an incredible joy!
More soon, my friends. Thanks again!
In Christ's love,
Tricia

Dear Gary,
Thank you for your
generous support of my campaign for the California State Senate.
During this challenging
time in California we need a respected and experienced voice for our
community in Sacramento. With the help of friends like you, I look forward
to continuing my work on key issues that matter to you:
- Continuing to fight
for public schools: pre-school through university.
- Working to make sure
the State of California avoids wasting millions of taxpayer dollars on
failed government technology.
- Improving long-term
care so that older Californians can choose to stay at home with their
families or in quality nursing homes.
- Encouraging economic
growth, attracting new business investment and creating good jobs at
good wages.
My strong record of
accomplishment enables me to expand upon a solid foundation that will lead
to victory in this race. Your early support is crucial to our success, and
your financial contribution will help us deliver our message to the voters
of the 13th Senate District.
I am grateful for your
support and friendship!
Best Regards,

Dear Gary,
I enjoyed meeting with
you concerning my candidacy for the 13th Senate District. Having the City
for Santa Clara Firefighter's endorsement means a great deal to me. I have
always had the highest personal regard for our working men and women,
especially those who put themselves in harm's way to protect the safety of
others.
You and I both know that
firefighters are an integral and important part of our community. I have
supported and voted for legislation that protects and helps firefighters.
I have long supported binding arbitration that protects contractual
agreements. I voted to increase firefighter benefits, strengthen pensions
and increase the pay of CDF rank-and-file firefighters.
As your Senator, I will
continue my staunch support for legislation that will strengthen and
protect our firefighters. Again, thank you for the City of Santa Clara
Firefighters endorsement.
Best Regards,

Dear Mr. Niblock and Mr.
Ray,
Thank you for writing to me about new
overtime pay rules being proposed by the Bush
administration. I appreciate hearing from you.
Currently, about 80 million American
workers are covered by the Fair Labor Standards
Act (FLSA). No Federal law prohibits employers
from requiring as many work hours from their employees
as they want, so the only deterrent to excessive work hours is the
requirement that employers give overtime pay to those who are
covered. Changes in the current regulations could sharply limit
paid overtime.
While I support increased flexibility for
workers to choose how to structure their work
week and when to spend time with their families,
I oppose changes to the FLSA that would allow
employers to limit overtime pay and pressure employees to work
additional hours without compensation. Please know that I
understand your concerns and I will work to address them.
Again, thank you for writing. Should you
have any further comments or questions about
this, or any other issue, please do not hesitate
to call my Washington, DC staff at (202) 224-3841.
Best Regards.

Dear Mr. Jacquez:
Thank you for contacting me to express your
concerns about offsets in the Social Security
system. I appreciate hearing from you, and I
apologize for the delay in my response.
I have heard from many people about the
impact of the windfall elimination and government
pension offset provisions on their Social
Security benefits. These provisions were enacted
to reduce financial burdens on the Social
Security system. However, many retired
government employees are now suffering as a
result of lower benefits. To impose this penalty
on public employees, whose salaries are often
already lower than those in the private sector,
is unfair and also unwise at a time when we are
struggling to recruit qualified people into
public service.
As you may know, I am a co-sponsor of S. 349,
the Social Security Fairness Act of 2003,
which provides relief to those suffering from
these penalties by repealing the government
pension offset and windfall elimination
provisions. Rest assured, I will continue to
give it my strongest support.
Again, thank you for writing to me. Please
do not hesitate to contact me in the future about
this or any other issue that is of concern to
you.
Sincerely,
Barbara Boxer

Dear Chief
Kleinheinz,
I am writing this letter
to express the gratitude of me and my wife to the crew members of Fire Station #
3, who responded to an emergency involving our 3 year old daughter.
On Saturday, September
8, at approximately 11:30 PM, I was at work and received an emergency page from
my wife to call her at our house. I immediately phoned my wife and she was
hysterical. She told me that while she was preparing the house for our 3 year
old daughter's birthday party to be held Sunday, our daughter had gotten out of
bed, come into the living room, and laid down on the floor. My wife had left an
open tube of super glue on the floor and my daughter had put her head directly
onto the open tube. Her right eye came into contact with the tube and some of
the super glue had gotten in her eye and glued her right eye closed.
My wife immediately
called 911 and began flushing my daughter's eye with water. The fire department
was at our house within a few minutes and giving my daughter first aid. I came
home immediately from work, and by the time I got home there were at least 5-6
firefighters and paramedics on scene. One of the firefighters had taken my 8
year old son aside and was talking with him and calming him down. At least 3
firefighters / paramedics were working on my daughter, and, considering the
circumstances, she was amazingly calm. My wife, although still extremely shaken,
was reassured by the professionalism, compassion, and expertise exhibited by the
responding crew.
My daughter was
transported via ambulance to Kaiser. As it turns out, super glue does not
contain any substances damaging to the eye. The doctor was able to cut her
eyelashes and she immediately opened her eye with no permanent damage to her eye
or vision. To say that my wife and I were relieved would be a huge
understatement. As a parent, I cannot think of a worse feeling than to see your
own child sick or injured. We went from one end of the emotional scale to the
other in a matter of moments.
This story, and our
admiration for the personal of Station # 3, does not end there. On Monday
afternoon I was at home with my daughter, and I heard a knock at our door. When
I answered the door, there stood 3 of the firefighters who had responded to our
house on Saturday night. They were there to see how my daughter was doing, and
they also gave her a stuffed bear, which she loves, for her birthday. I cannot
believe this gesture of kindness and giving, and what this meant to us.
I am a Police Officer
for the City of San Jose. I know that those in public service make good targets
for the media, and the media dwells on criticism and often ignores the positive,
for the sake of selling a newspaper. I just wanted to be sure that those from
Station # 3 who responded to our house are recognized for going way beyond the
call of duty. They exemplify the model of professionalism and compassion. I
would greatly appreciate it if you could pass along our gratitude to those
involved, and a copy of this letter finds its way into their personnel files. I
would like to have gotten the names of each person involved, but under the
circumstances this was not possible.
Sincerely,

Thank you so much for
planning such a memorable retirement dinner. My whole family had a great time!
We'll be talking about the "Munson Tape" forever.
It was a little over 28
years ago that I walked into Station One and wanted to talk to someone about a
career in the fire service. A young training officer named Ted Rose gave me a
Station tour and I had my first introduction to a large part of my life.
Now that part is over

I want to especially
thank Bill Stone for all his hard work on the event. Pat was so pleased with the

A message for Fire Chief Philip
Kleinheinz from a senior citizen of Santa Clara (85
yrs. old in December.)
You have three of the most
caring and helpful men at Fire Station # 4. The Engine 4 crew - A-shift - Capt.
Paul Boskovich, Driver George Cintas and Fire Fighter Dave Shade.
On Wednesday, late afternoon, we
found our hot water tank spewing water all over the garage floor. I called the
number which had been placed on a sticker when the tank was installed on
9/15/93. "No, we can't come tonight or tomorrow (thanksgiving) I don’t
think Friday, possibly Saturday." So I started using the phone book and got
the same answers "not until Monday.'
My daughter was concerned about a
dangerous gas water heater and drove around the block to the fire station and
told them what was happening. The three came over, turned and taped the broken
valve and assured us it was a temporary safe fix.
On Friday the crew was at the door to
see how I was doing. With my quad-cane and bent over by rheumatoid arthritis and
osteoporosis, they smiled and said, "cancel it, we are going to put a new
valve on and you won't have to worry anymore."
I felt better when I could pay for
the valve but they would not accept any money from me for anything they did.
I will never forget these gentlemen
and be thankful to know there are caring people among us.
Sincerely,

Dear Chief
Kleinheinz,
As a retired school teacher living
with an elderly mother, I've been dismayed by the number of business people who
have tried to take advantage of her. Mom is a person who has helped people, as a
community person, her entire life. She has instilled those values in her
children and granddaughter.
You have received a letter from
Mom detailing "above and beyond" services received from fire station #
4, Engine 4 crew, A-shift; Capt. Paul Boskovich,
Driver Engineer George Cintas, and Firefighter David Shade.
I would second her hearty "thank you", and add more. Mom's belief in
the innate goodness of people has been enhanced by these good men. It was not
just the special service delivered, but how it was given.
Many people treat my very intelligent
mother in childlike ways, or even talking through me in business matters. The
latter are referred to her. Your men treated her as an alert adult who had a
problem which needed solving. They treated her gently and with dignity. When she
protested their efforts as her imposition, Capt. Boskovich said, "We all
have mothers and sisters." It was just the right thing to say. When they
returned on Friday morning, the same demeanor was there.
Mom's 85th birthday will
be on December 6th. Her family members have planned a very special
surprise for the evening. It probably won't hold a candle to the very special
attention she has already received from three caring men. Many thanks to you,
your department and the A-shift of Fire Station # 4.
Sincerely,

Chief Kleinheinz,
I was assigned as Strike Team
Leader for XCS 2303A leaving Santa Clara County for Chico on August 27, 1999.
SNC E-6, staffed by Captain Noel Moss, D/E Bruce Puphal, FF Ward Simonson and FF
Pat Howard, was assigned to XSC 2303A.
Our assignments were uneventful,
with many hours on standby. Often, these are the times when discipline begins to
break down and, as boredom sets in, professionalism tends to disappear. This was
not the case with members of XSC 2303A. I want to commend the crew of Engine 6
for the professional demeanor that they exhibited 100% of the time. My task as
Strike Team Leader was simply to relax and enjoy being accompanied by a fine
group of professional firefighters. The expertise of these individuals was
apparent. They were very cooperative, respectful, and polite to everyone we came
into contact with, especially the citizens of Chico. Please express my gratitude
to them.

Bill Stone and the volunteers he gathered to help two old seniors which are both
handicapped. They did a great job and Bill came by after his meeting and still
did more work in the back yard. You cannot imagine what this meant to us.
We are still working trying to get
the City Electric Department to cut around the wires, especially those branches
that are dead and may catch fire from a spark.
Losing our handyman to a heart
attack last year it is hard to find help to fit our income. It is sad that this
service is a one time deal. We hope we can find someone to help.
Keep up the good work Bill Stone
and volunteers.

Brother Danny Cortazzo,
Ride-A-Wave Program Developer/Coordinator
Dear Danny,
On behalf of the
Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation I want to thank you for creating such a positive
experience for our kids. All of the burn survivors and volunteers involved were
left with a lasting impression. Your crew was exceptional and the day was full
of fun and new experiences. You are really great with the kids and I know you
are going to touch so many more lives with this program you have created.
How many people
get the opportunity to simply in the ocean, especially those that can not just
throw on a swim suite and run down to the water? Cynthia, a 11 year old burn
survivor, has never been able to splash in the water and play tag with the
waves. The wonder in her face was incredible as Zeuf told us to pull away the
floating wheel chair and let the wet suit and the gentle waves help her float up
and down in the ocean. These moments are what make Ride a Wave such an important
experience. I do not mean that because someone with one leg would NEVER go into
the ocean, but because someone who has been badly disfigured by fire and is
missing limbs would normally not feel comfortable or encouraged to throw on a
bathing suite and go swimming in the ocean. Ride a Wave gave that lifetime
memory to Cynthia and to so many others with special needs.
With the efforts
of RAW and all the donors and volunteers that contribute to this special program
10 children from the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation had the time of their lives
boogie boarding. body surfing, ocean kayaking, speed boat riding, and surfing.
Although the waves were not that big, by you getting Erin up on that one ridable
wave of the day you created a future surfer. She was so proud of that and talked
about it all the way back to Oakland.
The Alisa Ann Ruch
Burn Foundation strives to give burn-injured children new experiences that help
them build their confidence, self-esteem, and connections with other survivors,
The Ride a Wave program is the perfect event for our kids and we thank all who
made it possible.
We hope that next
year we can enjoy another special day in Santa Cruz with Ride A Wave.
Sincerely,
Jim Bosch.

I want to thank you
all for your help. My husband was finally stabilized in July. (He had) surgery
to remove a tumor from the brain. It's benign. Now in transitional care and
improving daily.
I don't have enough
words for appreciation and to express my heartfelt thanks. You were a God send.

After being diagnosed
last June that Dan had a rare cancer, you can only imagine what our feelings
were. Our Family has endured many emotional ups and downs which we can
only compare to a roller coaster ride. There were times when Dan had
to endure open heart surgery, chemotherapy, infections, radiology and numerous
stays in the hospital. He is currently recovering from a one month stay in
the hospital (all of April) because his lungs are now permanently damaged from
the radiation.
We have had great
support from our friends, family and even people we do not know. Lou Papan, our local assemblyman has introduced a bill AB539 which would change the
workers compensation laws to make it easier for a firefighter or peace officer
to get workers compensation benefits in the event they get cancer.
All of this support
is greatly appreciated by our family and we would like you to know that your
donation to create a smile foundation has helped us tremendously.
Sincerely,
Dan Gadwah & Mary Gadwah

Gentlemen:
I want to express my sincere
thanks to those of you who responded to the accident at Lafayette and El Camino,
in June, and rescued me from my overturned vehicle.
Fortunately my injuries are
superficial. The steering wheel air bag really did a number on my face,
but it's slowly clearing up a little each day.
Again, thanks for being there when
I needed you.

At the end of March 99, you came
to my rescue. I want to thank you very much for all you did for me.
I know you ain't appreciated near enough until you save someone's life or
someone we love. I just want you to know how much my family and I
appreciate all you do and how we could not get by in this world without you and
your kind.

Dear Firefighters
of Local 1171,
Thank you for the beautiful basket
of flowers you sent upon the arrival of our daughter, Sophia. They brightened my
hospital room and our house when we were home. It’s nice to know Jeff works
with such a great group of people!

Dear Santa Clara Fire Dept,
Thank all the people who responded
to help me in March, when I fainted at Cosco. The doctors still haven’t
figured why, but I am alive and that’s all that counts.

Dear Chief Simon
For two school years, sixth
grade students at Cabrillo Middle School have been fortunate to have been able
to participate in the Better Things Program
In and of itself, the program is wonderful, as it has clearly helped students
develop communication, self-help, and refusal skills. I have come to realize,
however, that programs are only as good as the people who deliver them, and in
Cabrillo’s case, no two better people could have come to our campus than Wendy
Domster and Ron McDowell.
Without fail. Wendy and Ron have
come to Cabrillo even Tuesday to work with our kids They educate, they inspire,
they model ideals, they care? And, perhaps the single greatest evidence that
kids have that adults care for them is that the adults are there to be with the
kids when they don’t have to be Clearly, Wendy and Ron don’t have to involve
themselves in this program on their days off, as the average person would simply
say they have better things to do Ron and Wendy, on the other hand, have Better
Things to do
With all of this said, it
was my sincere pleasure to have named Ron and Wendy
as the recipients of the 1999 Public School Week Award from Cabrillo Middle
School along with an eighth grade boy and girl
student from Cabrillo, Ron and Wendy will receive the award at a ceremony on
April 20 at seven o’clock in the evening in Buchser Middle School’s
multipurpose room The Cabrillo recipients will join three award winners from
each elementary, middle and high school in Santa Clara in being paid tribute for
the contributions that they have made to our school community
If you have a chance, please
congratulate Wendy and Ron for the honor they have earned and the Better Things
that they have done.

Dear Ms. Sparacino:
We wanted to express our
appreciation to 3 members of the Santa Clara Fire Department who volunteered to
trim our tree away from the roof of our house. Bill
Stone, Pat Howard, and John Costere are part of a
Senior Assistance (Senior Assist)
group that helps Senior Citizens with difficult jobs. They were very polite and
efficient, and we appreciated their kind help.
We have lived in Santa Clara in
the same home for 50 years, and as Senior Citizens we are thankful to the City
of Santa Clara for supporting organizations of this kind. Please extend our
thanks to the Fire Department for volunteering their help.
Sincerely...

Dear Sirs,
Three months ago my dear husband
died after a three years battle with cancer. During the last year of his life we
had to have the help of people in your Station 7 in Santa Clara.
I know that my husband would want
me to send you this card to acknowledge how kind, helpful and thorough this
whole team of Station 7 was.
Please let them know how grateful
he and I were. You should be proud of them.
Sincerely...
To All the Brothers and Sisters at

Dear Firefighters,
On behalf of Soroptomist
International of Santa Clara, I would like to thank you for your assistance at
our recent fundraiser, Aloha! Casino Royale.
We are still in the process of
tallying the results, but we believe that this year's event raised over $25,000
which will net us a generous sum to pass on to our selected organizations this
year.
Our events are successful only
because of the hard work of our members and hose of you who unselfishly
volunteer your time. We are most gateful for that.
Once again, thank you for your
generous assistance.
Sincerely, Terri
Kolstad (Volunteer Coordinator)
