CalPERS Marks Third Year of Double-digit Investment Gains Sacramento Bee (08-03-2006) Signaling the wave of the future, fast-growing international stocks and private market investments led the California Public Employees' Retirement System to a 12.3 percent gain for the fiscal year. The results, announced Tuesday, marked the third straight year of double-digit percentage gains and portend a shift in investment strategy by the nation's largest public pension fund. In addition, the 2005-06 fiscal year saw CalPERS reach a milestone as the fund surpassed the $200 billion barrier for the first time and continue a comeback from three years of losses during the Wall Street downturn in the early 2000s. Assets grew to $208 billion, up from $189.8 billion in 2005.

Woman suffers burns in two-alarm Santa Clara fire Bay City News Service (7-27-2006) A woman suffered second-degree burns to her arm when she tried unsuccessfully to extinguish a kitchen fire at her Santa Clara home today, Santa Clara Fire Department spokesman Dave Parker said this afternoon. The woman was heating oil on her electric stove when a spark sent flames up the exhaust fan, causing the two-alarm blaze to spread into the attic where it ravaged most of the metal and wood shake roof and caused $200,000 in damage, Parker said. Parker said the home is unlivable in part because firefighters had to cut a 3-by-3 foot hole in the roof to fight the fire. Although the flames did not spread to rooms beyond the kitchen, the house did sustain both water and smoke damage inside. The woman, her husband and their three preschool-aged children will stay with friends and family for now, Parker said. She was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment of her arm and later released, he said. Most Santa Clara firefighters were attending a funeral for a colleague when the fire broke out, prompting neighboring agencies, including San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara County fire departments to respond. The fire was reported at 946 Maryann Drive at 12:41 p.m.

Update Scott Walsh from Livermore Pleasanton Fire Fighters (7-21-2006) I’m very happy to let you know your thoughts and prayers are being answered. Scott is progressing very well as a matter of fact so well that he should be home in approximately 4 weeks, with 6 weeks being the latest. He continues to set rehab records. He might even be home in 2 weeks if he keeps this pace up.

The 2 infections Scott had are gone and he is down to one pain pill a day. He is really happy to be feeling better now that he is off a lot of the medications. On Friday Scott was given the ok to start putting weight on his right leg (8 week mark since surgery). As I said Scott is progressing so well that he is already walking with a cane (AMAZING). While I was visiting Scott on Monday he was able to walk down the hall and even turn around. He is also able to get in and out of his bed and has mastered getting into his wheelchair by himself. By the way he is ready to challenge anybody to a wheelchair race. They hope to have him stable enough on his feet to be able to get him in and out of a car by Thursday or Friday. He will then be able to get out of the Rehabilitation Center for about an hour or so to go for a ride.

There has been one little setback, but it is good. He is healing so well and getting good bone growth that he will have to have one more surgery on his arm. It will be to scrape some bone away in the elbow area to help him with his range of motion in that arm. This will probably happen after he gets home.

It looks like he will be staying at the Los Altos Sub Acute Care and Rehabilitation Center until he comes home. He will not be returning to Stanford before he comes home.

Scott did show me the x-rays of his pelvis, elbow and wrist. It is pretty amazing at what they have done in putting him back together. It was like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. He will sure set those metal detectors off at the airports now when he travels.

He is so looking forward to coming home. His spirits are high. He is looking great and has lost some weight, matter of fact a lot. He misses everyone and says to say hello and Thanks for thinking and caring about him. He can’t thank everyone enough for the support his family has received thru this time.

On behalf of the Livermore - Pleasanton Firefighters Local 1974 I wish to thank everyone for the support you have given. I can’t wait for that day he gets to come home. I know this is just another hurdle we will pass but it is nice to know we are on the downhill side.

Acting President Livermore - Pleasanton Firefighters Local 1974

Four-alarm fire damages vacant office buildings in Santa Clara By Sandra Gonzales Mercury News (7-11-2006) A four-alarm fire tore through two empty office buildings in southeast Santa Clara on Monday afternoon, sending flames 30 feet into the air and scorching nearby trees. The fire, which began about 2:30 p.m. at 3600 Pruneridge Avenue near Lawrence Expressway, was extinguished before 5 p.m. with the help of 53 firefighters from Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara County fire departments. Santa Clara Fire Department spokesman Dave Parker said the fire is considered suspicious but that no suspects have been identified. Parker said the blaze was particularly difficult to fight because of the hot weather and the buildings' tile roofing, which tends to insulate flames. The flames were centered in the attic of one of the buildings in the single-story complex, which was slated for housing redevelopment. No injuries were reported and no damage estimate was available Monday night. Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Clara's fire marshal at (408) 615-4970. Fire damages bakery, three other businesses in Santa Clara by Kimra McPherson Mercury News (6-22-2006) A one-alarm fire shortly before midnight Wednesday in a Santa Clara strip mall damaged a bakery and three other businesses, the Santa Clara Fire Department reported. A stack of pallets, pressed cardboard and plastic crates caught fire outside the Smart & Final in a one-story strip mall at 2065 El Camino Real, Battalion Chief John Scanlon said. The 25 firefighters who responded to the one-alarm fire had to work carefully because power lines came down around the building, he said. The fire spread to the walls of Copenhagen Bakery and Deli, two doors down at 2079 El Camino Real, Scanlon said. Firefighters also had to force entry into two other businesses to make sure the fire was contained. Smart & Final itself suffered only light damage to its exterior, Scanlon said. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion and is now doing fine, Scanlon said. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The fire took about 45 minutes to bring under control. The cost of the damage has not been estimated, but Scanlon said the bakery and other businesses would have to repair holes in their roofs and walls.

Fourteen displaced after two-alarm fire in Santa Clara (Bay Cities News Service)  (6-04-2006)  Fourteen residents were displaced Saturday night after a two-alarm fire struck an eight-unit apartment building in Santa Clara, according to Santa Clara Deputy Fire Chief Gene Sawyer. The fire at 2365 Sutter Ave. was called in at 6:45 p.m. and was raised to a second alarm a few minutes later, Sawyer said. The fire primarily affected one unit of the wood frame, stucco two-story residential building, and that unit is a `complete loss,` Sawyer said. There is also limited damage to a few of the other units. The fourteen residents were displaced because the fire department cut gas and power to the building, Sawyer said. The American Red Cross assisted residents in finding housing for the night. One person was home in the unit of the building that sustained the most damage in the fire, Sawyer said. That person self-extricated and had minor burns as well as a cut, possibly from exiting the building through a window, according to Sawyer. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but is under investigation by the fire department. The fire was brought under control around 7:10 p.m., according to Sawyer.

Schwarzenegger Scamming the Taxpayers...Again? (5-23-2006) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's communications director, Adam Mendelsohn, says the governor's special Web sites are strictly nonpartisan and intended to help Californians better understand government. But they are raising some questions in political circles over whether his office is blurring the lines between state business and his bid to seek a second term this fall. "This is just a continued extension of Arnold Inc. There seems to be no divide between the campaign and state office, and that has flowed over to the Web," said Maviglio, who worked for former Gov. Gray Davis. "Under Davis, there was a firewall between the state and campaign and we never wanted to come close to crossing that line. "Schwarzenegger has crossed that line before. A Register investigation last spring documented five occasions in which state taxpayer money helped finance events where the governor either promoted a ballot initiative or called for voters to remove Democrats from office. The Democratic Party and a watchdog group asked three agencies to investigate but nothing has come of the requests (read follow-up story).

Mt. View (L1965) Firefighters Give Peninsula Couple Home Makeover (5-22-2006) (CBS 5) A low income disabled woman gets the house of her dreams. The home Genevieve Garcia and her husband had lived in for 53 years needed repairs in almost every room. Thuy Vu reports on the special makeover provided by a group of big-hearted peninsula firefighters.

Top Schwarzenegger fundraiser helps Governor keep breaking his promise.   (05-19-2006) Her name, unknown to all but the upper echelon of Republican consultants, donors and candidates in California, is Renee Croce and she is at the epicenter of the governor's elaborate and record-breaking fund-raising apparatus. But critics have denounced his record-breaking fund raising, headed by Croce, as disingenuous. It was the first in a pattern of broken promises that labor groups tattooed to the governor in last year's special election. "He promised to be different and he promised not to raise special-interest money," says Robin Swanson, a spokeswoman for the Alliance for a Better California, the union coalition that led the battle against last year's special election. "He said it over and over in the campaign. He has broken that promise a thousand times over."

Local 1974 President Seriously Injured in Fall at Fire Scene (05-04-2006) -- The president of Livermore Pleasanton Firefighters Local 1974 is in stable but guarded condition at the Stanford Medical Center following a fall at the scene of a pre-dawn fire in Pleasanton. Scott Walsh, a captain and veteran of both his profession and his union, was battling a blaze at a garbage transfer facility early Monday morning when he fell 25 feet onto a concrete floor. Walsh was rescued by his brother firefighters and immediately transported to the hospital. (Read the story in the Tri-Herald News.)

Three-Alarm Commercial Structure Fire Draws Headlines (04-30-2006) -- Units from the Santa Clara Fire Department, assisted by mutual aid resources from the San Jose Fire Department, battled a tough three alarm commercial structure fire at 3310 Victor Court on Santa Clara's north side. The first report of fire at Redwood Space Controls, a manufacturer of printed circuit boards, was received at 12:43 am, April 27, 2006, from a passerby. (San Jose Mercury News Story.)

Brother Skillet's Son Darrell Suits Up for Success in a Major Way! (3-27-2006) - (The following is an email report from Brother Darrell Sales)  I would like to give any who maybe interested an update on Darrell. We spent the last seven days in Arizona for spring training. We were able to see several games and although he struggled at the plate while we were there it was a pleasure to see him play. We returned home on Sunday and talking to him on the phone, he didn't get a chance to play that day.

I received a call from Darrell around 2:00 PM yesterday and he told me that he was told to suit up for the major league game last night. Darrell has been playing with the single A team so he was pretty excited to get the call. We were able to get the game on the internet and watch the Angels put a hurting on the Padres. In the 8th inning the score was Angels 10 and the Padres 2. Darrell was told to go in and bat for the pitcher, what an opportunity! Grounded out to the second baseman but what a thrill for him.

On the defensive side of the game Darrell was told to go to right field as the current right fielder has gotten hurt and they wanted Darrell to fill the position. Nothing too exiting defensively and as luck would have it, the right fielder was due to hit in the 9th. Darrell (Soup as he is called) gets his chance to hit again and this time there are runners at each base and no outs. Darrell (Soup) steps up to the plate. A 20 year old at bat with bases loaded in the 9th inning with no outs and he is at the major league level! What would be going through your mind?

First pitch delivered and who could believe a GRAND SLAM HOMERUN!!!!. I can think of many times when Darrell has made us proud and this has to be one of the best. Steph, Samantha and I were going nuts. After the game when we talked to him, I asked him what was going through his mind as he stepped up to bat. His response was " I was thinking about just getting under it looking for a sacrifice fly to score a few runners". Looks like he did that.

Today he will be more than likely back down to the single A level but you never know.

p.s. A little boy caught Darrell's 1st major league home run ball and Darrell was happy to autograph it for him. Don't ever stop dreaming!

San Francisco Firefighters Dis-affiliate from CPF Owing Thousands in Back Dues (01-16-2006) -- San Francisco Firefighters, Local 798 have resigned from the California Professional Firefighters leaving the IAFF's largest state affiliate owing thousands of dollars in back dues that have been left unpaid since September 2005. The leadership of the 1800 member local has been disgruntled since the May 2005 Convention where by unanimous vote the 30,000 CPF members approved a special assessment to defeat Proposition 75. President John Hanley has also claimed that San Francisco is deserving of it's own CPF District (similar to L.A. City and L.A. County) by virtue of it's "political influence", even though L798 does not meet the criteria as stated in the CPF Constitution and Bylaws. At the L798 Union meeting where members were asked to vote to dis-affiliate, CPF leadership was not extended an invitation to give their side of the story, or to allow L798 members an opportunity to question CPF officers. CPF President Lou Paulson and the CPF Executive Board have responded to Local 798's charges. To read CPF's response click here.

Absence from CHP funeral angers unions (02-25-2006) -- True to form and his past history, Arnold Schwarzenegger showed his disrespect and disdain for public safety officers by choosing to attend a Republican fundraiser instead of the funeral of a fallen brother police officer. Law enforcement unions attacked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday for skipping the Modesto funeral held for fallen California Highway Patrol Officer Earl Scott.

Brother Shaddle Makes Off-Duty Rescue - Saves Life of Two-year old Toddler (02-20-2006) Returning home from a New Year's Eve party, Brother Dennis Shaddle and his wife Jennifer encountered a vehicle on fire with a child trapped inside. Click here to read more about his dramatic rescue that resulted in saving the life of the two year-old child. In early February Brother Shaddle was honored by the Kiwanis Club and by the City of Santa Clara for his courageous efforts. Shaddle, accompanied by his wife Jennifer, was presented with a Certificate Of Merit in Recognition of Meritorious Service and Life Saving Actions by Dirk Heartman, the current President of The Kiwanis Club of Santa Clara. Also in attendance was Chief Kleinheinz.

Later that night they attended the City Council meeting where this years Public Safety Providers Week was being recognized. In addition to Shaddle, many other fellow firefighters were awarded Certificates of Commendation. Shaddle and Brother Noel Moss were awarded Medals of Valor by the Mayor and Chief Kleinheinz. Brother Moss was the Captain on Engine 7 and was first-in to a working structure fire on Bing Drive on Christmas morning. There were reportedly people still in the apartment. Through the actions of his crew and additional fire units, two lives were saved.

(San Jose Mercury News story of the rescue.)

The burned out van that Brother Shaddle entered to rescue the child was completely gutted by flames.

William Purvis, retired firefighter (01-30-2006) By Sue Chenoweth / Mercury News William ``Bill'' Purvis IV was among a select seven who beat out 3,000 applicants vying for positions with the Santa Clara Fire Department in 1987. The six-foot, 200-pound aspiring firefighter had already scored points with the department by working for a decade as a volunteer, according to his wife, Susan Purvis. Kidney disease finally claimed his life Jan. 17. He was 47. Contributions in Mr. Purvis' name can be sent to Santa Clara City Firefighters Foundation, P.O. Box 1185, Santa Clara, Calif., 95052-1185.

CalPERS Earns 11.2 Percent for Year  (01-19-2006) The pension fund earned 11.2 percent return on its investments last year, marking the third year in a row that CalPERS has earned double-digit returns. A report to the Board said CalPERS assets totaled a record $200.1 billion to sustain the System’s position as the nation’s largest public pension fund. Average annual returns were 15.9 percent over the last three years, 5.8 percent over five years, and 9.2 percent over 10 years. The pension fund also beat its benchmark target of 8.9 percent in 2005.Sacramento Bee article

Assemblyman Keith Richman (R-38th SoCal) Continues Attack on Public Employee Pensions 01-03-2006 Richman clearly is a man who doesn't give up easily. Firefighters Say "Thank You" to Voters CPF-sponsored radio spot airing in major markets statewide (01-03-2006) As 2006 dawns, California’s firefighters are taking a moment to do something not often seen in an election. They’re saying “thank you” to the voters. In a radio message airing this week in three major markets, firefighters who participated in last year’s campaign against Governor Schwarzenegger’s special election agenda thanked the voters for their understanding and support on November 8th. The firefighters – Brian Rice of Sacramento and Mark Skeen of San Jose – were both featured in television spots during the campaign. “We’re more at home on a fire line than in front of a television camera,” said Rice in the spot. “But you took the time to listen and on November 8th, you trusted us with your votes.” The radio spot was produced by California Professional Firefighters through its FireStar Productions, and is airing on stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento. CPF President Lou Paulson said firefighters’ passionate commitment to defeating the special election agenda made them especially appreciative of the voters’ support. “Firefighters put themselves out front in this campaign as they never have before,” said Paulson. “It means a lot to them that the voters responded, and we just felt it was appropriate to spend a little time and money to say ‘thanks.’” The spot is airing between Jan. 3 and 9. CofC and CMTA Change Course - Move Away from Governor Schwarzenegger and Republicans
(12-22-2005)  A political action committee sponsored by the chamber (California Chamber of Commerce) and the California Manufacturers and Technology Assn. is preparing an aggressive bid to elect moderate Democrats to the Assembly next year, focusing on the June primary. Democratic consultant Darry Sragow, retained months ago to advise the committee, called Jobs PAC, said its goal would be to elect as many moderate Democrats as possible. He said he wouldn't work to elect any Republicans.

Union Political Action Paying Off - CA Chamber of Commerce and CA Business Roundtable Oppose 2006 Prop 75-like Ballot Initiative (12-22-2005) A conservative Republican activist has proposed two ballot initiatives to restrict union and corporate financing of political campaigns in California, a move that business groups on Wednesday criticized as a distraction to solving the state's critical public policy challenges. Allan Zaremberg and Bill Hauck, the respective presidents of the two groups, put out a joint statement Wednesday criticizing the concept as potentially thwarting their efforts to keep the focus at the Capitol next year on transportation, energy and education issues.

Paycheck Deception ... The Sequel - Prop. 75 backers introduce two new paycheck deception measures for November ballot. (12-16-2005) Which part of “no” don’t they get? Despite twice failing with voters, the folks who last year tried to silence your voice with Proposition 75 are coming back with yet another attack on working Californians.

The California Attorney General has received requests for Title and Summary for not one but two new Prop. 75-style initiatives for the November, 2006 ballot. One is essentially a carbon-copy of Proposition 75, attacking firefighters, teachers, nurses and other public employees with the unnecessary and undemocratic restrictions on their right to participate in the political process through their union. The other measure appears more sweeping – banning corporate and labor contributions – but contains a big fat loophole for "trade associations" ... like the Chamber of Commerce, the League of California Cities ... that serve the special interests that would benefit from silencing your voice. The author of these two measures is a familiar name – Mark Bucher, the man who wrote the first failed Paycheck Deception initiative – 1998’s Proposition 226. Bucher – an ally of former Governor Pete Wilson – solicited massive out-of-state contributions from the same organizations that are now seeking to privatize public retirement, including national anti-public employee activist Grover Norquist.

“The voters have spoken twice on this issue, and twice they said NO to silencing the political voices of working Californians,” said California Professional Firefighters President Lou Paulson. “For them to come back yet again so soon after Proposition 75 insults the voters and demeans our democracy.”

Proposition 75 was part of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's anti-labor special election agenda, which was soundly defeated in the November 8th Special Election. Prop. 75 lost by nearly a half-million votes, and by an even greater percentage than Prop. 226 in 1998.

Idaho Firefighters Overturn Prop 75 Style Legislative Restrictions (12-04-2005) Less than a month after California voters rejected a mean-spirited attack on the voice of labor, a judge in Idaho made it two for two for firefighters, teachers and other working people. After a two-year legal fight with national implications, U.S. District Judge Lynn Winmill has issued a permanent injunction against implementing any provisions of a paycheck deception law that closely resembles the failed Proposition 75 on the November special election ballot.

Court Orders Schwarzenegger to Stop Producing Fake News Videos with Public Funds (12-02-2005) "This (ruling) sends a powerful message to this administration that Hollywood is Hollywood and Sacramento is where we do governance," said Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, who chairs the budget subcommittee that oversees the agency and had requested a state audit of the videos. "We're transparent and honest with the public, and we don't need gimmicks to do your job and to govern." The governor's use of the videos was reminiscent of similar tactics used by the Bush administration. Earlier this year, the U.S. Government Accountability Office criticized the Bush administration for creating videos that it said amounted to illegal "covert propaganda" because they didn't disclose the source.

Schwarzenegger Sells Out California to Bask in Chinese Limelight (11-30-2005) Two weeks ago, as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was basking in his carefully scripted celeb-trip to China, California was getting its pocket picked by the governor's fellow Republicans in Washington. According to those who calibrate such things, at the very moment the Collectinator was watching the new Harry Potter movie in Beijing, the House, by a vote of 217-215, was approving a five-year, $50 billion budget cut bill that would cost California at least $1 billion a year, and probably more. What is indisputable is that if the majority of cuts in the House bill become law, they'll drive another hole in a California budget that, with the possible exception of the next fiscal year, will continue to run deficits as far ahead as the eye can see.

In the Face of Republican Cutbacks, Firefighting Is About to Get More Dangerous (11-25-2005) Trying to offset Iraq war and Hurricane Katrina costs, the Bush administration is proposing major funding cuts that would largely ground a federal aerial firefighting fleet that is already under a cloud of uncertainty due to an April plane crash. The White House has pitched eliminating a $500 million reserve fund that is tapped to battle blazes across California and the rest of the nation during heavy fire years.

Santa Clara City Council Passes Resolution Endorsing NO ON PROP 76! (11-3-2005) At the Santa Clara City Council meeting on Tuesday November 1 the Santa Clara City Council made a courageous stand against the attempt to damage the State of California by conservative Republican Governor and his anti-labor, anti-firefighter, anti-working family cronies like Louis Uhler and Grover Norquist. Thanks to Council members Jamie Mathews, Jamie McLeod, Kevin Moore and Dominic Caserta (who brought this issue to the Council's attention) for voting the resolution into the record.

Schwarzenegger May Face Other Side of Recall Challenge (10-09-2005) -- Until recently, Dr. Kenneth Matsumura's most notable achievement was inventing an artificial liver that makes use of live rabbit cells suspended in solution. He says he also has a patent on a wristwatch that sounds an alarm before the wearer has a heart attack. But on Friday, Dr. Matsumura showed up at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office in Sacramento and delivered a formal notice of a recall against the governor. Now Dr. Matsumura, a 60-year-old physician from Berkeley, is being depicted as the Terminator's terminator among Mr. Schwarzenegger's partisan detractors. DEAN E. MURPHY in the New York Times

Daily Reports from IAFF Support Teams on the Ground in the Gulf States 09/04/2005

For Seven Days They Will Rest (09-14-2005) Pat Ball, a fire fighter for 31 years, spent tortured days watching his beloved city roiled by winds, water, fire, looting and death -- events spawned by Hurricane Katrina that he was helpless to prevent. But he and his fellow fire fighters weren't helpless when it came to saving lives. They stayed behind when the evacuation orders sounded. Rescuers who stepped in putrid flood waters, breathed their vapors or witnessed the destruction and dying for days and nights without end, are getting help now from an array of medical teams and critical incident counselors. Ball was one of hundreds of fire fighters assisted by the International Association of Fire Fighters command response center in the Zoar Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The air-conditioned church offered a place to sleep on mattresses covered in clean sheets and blankets, clean socks and underwear and other clothing, as well as friendly faces offering cold drinks and hot-cooked meals -- all provided by the IAFF. After two weeks of surviving horrid conditions, Ball and other fire fighters like him, have seven days off to process everything they've witnessed, reunite with their families and salvage something from their own homes. More than 90 percent of fire fighters in New Orleans lost everything.
