UTC Burn

Summer, 2001

Thanks to a combined effort by almost all Fire Departments in the Santa Clara Valley, this year's UTC Wildland Training Burn was a great success.

Firefighters from City agencies that rarely see, much less fight, hot, smoky wildland fires were given the opportunity to learn and try their skills at the "real" thing. It was an eye-opener for many folks and the lessons learned were intense and important.

.

A highlight of the drill was the live fire burn over with shelter deployment. Safety was the number one priority, but participants were able to experience the physical rigors as well as the emotional reactions that one experiences during a shelter deployment in a wildland fire. The greatest lesson learned...you don't want to have to do it! Escape routes and safety zones...you BETTER have 'em!

Every year in the State of California as many firefighters lose their lives fighting wildland fires as structure fires. The Santa Clara City Firefighters, Local 1171, want to thank the California Department of Forestry, Santa Clara Ranger Unit, and our many IAFF brothers and sisters for helping us to prepare for the inevitable strike team deployments during wildland fire season 2001.

Also a big thank you to our brothers and sisters in the SCFD Training Division for the fantastic photo images!
