![]() CALISTOGA RELAY (see photos below) A huge THANK YOU to all of the kind souls who helped in making this year's relay race such a success. Whether you were a runner, a volunteer or generously donated to our cause, all your collective efforts combined to make this endeavor something we can all be proud of. On October 2nd and 3rd, 12 Union brothers and sisters from Local 1171, embarked on a journey from the city of Calistoga to the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. We ran in a 194 mile, point to point, foot race around the clock. Each of our runners ran three legs of approximately 5-6 miles per leg. There were about 200 teams competing this year. Did we win? Only if the other 199 teams made a series of wrong turns. And it would still be close. And then again it depends on what you mean by "win." We hoped to break 30 hours and remain uninjured. Lofty goals we know, but we aimed high and accomplished our mission, which was have fun and raise as much money for the kids as possible.
There the kids enjoy arts and crafts, horseback riding, swimming and many other group activities which they would not otherwise get the chance to take part in. Their parents also enjoy a respite with the assurance that their children are receiving the special care and support that is necessary to accommodate children with disabilities. It's a great weekend for the kids, creating memories that will last a lifetime. VIA has agreed to earmark our donation to sponsor City of Santa Clara children specifically. We currently have about 40 children who qualify for this program.
The race itself was great and all who ran had a great time. We didn't finish in the
top three places. In fact, we were much closer to one of the final three, but again,
our goal of a good time and support of a worthy charity were well surpassed. We've donated $10,650.00 to VIA Rehabilitation Services. This represents sponsorship for 53 camp sessions for our special children of Santa Clara. The Union has sponsored $1,960.00 in entry fees, which balanced against the final donations, is a return of $5.43 to $1 in charitable donation monies. Not bad, thanks to you all.
