Public Safety Providers Awards

    The City of Santa Clara recognizes annually those men and women in our City who have made major quality of life contributions to the citizens of our town in the field of public safety. Local 1171 is proud to have many members who have enhanced the lives of others through quality public service.   

    Local 1171 Fire Captain Rick Harsh was awarded the Department's Distinguished Service Award for his efforts in establishing the Fire Department's Defibrillator Program as a model for other agencies.   The following individuals received the Department's Life Saving Award for their efforts that resulted in a life being saved: Fire Captains Curt Campbell and Dennis McDowell; Driver/Engineers Kevin Buchanan, Larry Gatt, Dave Picchi and Bob Schriver; and Firefighters David Euerle, Pat Howard, Larry Lambert, Phillip Martin and Scott Sorenson.

    Firefighter Mike Rose was awarded a Commendation Certificate for his off-duty actions at a structure fire. 

    Santa Clara Firefighter's Local 1171's Senior Assist Program, which assists senior citizens in Santa Clara with maintenance work around their home, was also recognized.  Captain John Costere, Driver/Engineer (Senior Assist Program Coordinator) Bill Stone and Volunteer/Reserve Battalion Chief Henry Machens received Commendation Certificates for their work with the program.

    The Home Emergency Assistance Team (HEAT) training program was also recognized.  The following personnel received Commendation Certificates for their work in training citizens in emergency procedures: Fire Captains Tom Evans and John Costere; Fire Marshall Martin Von Raesfeld; Driver/Engineers John Combs, Dave Cosimano, Matt Conner, Ron McDowell, Jeff Orlando and Bruce Puphal; Fire Prevention Specialist Craig Gamma; and Firefighters Jon Boucher and Ken Siu.
